India won’t impose tariffs on Chinese solar products

India chooses to stimulate competition, and drive down prices of solar products, to grow renewable energy.

India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) emphasized that it has no plans to impose tariff barriers against Chinese solar products. Chinese manufacturers reduced exports of solar modules to India fearing a backlash against their products due to U.S. opposition to module imports.

MNRE said imports of Chinese solar thermal technologies and equipment and thin-film modules could continue. Other state governments already allow project developers to import technologies and equipment at almost zero percent duties.

India generally desists from imposing anti-dumping duties on imported products, arguing it would be better to have prices drop considerably because of free market competition rather than subsidizing solar power projects.

The Indian government is avidly promoting solar power generation to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
