India’s largest solar power plant goes on line

The Adani Group has commissioned what is being touted as India’s largest solar power plant after a build process that took only five months.

The 40 MW solar power plant uses solar photo-voltaic (PV) technology. It has over 400,000 solar PV modules mounted on 21,600 structures erected on 130,000 foundations. The plant, located in the Kutch district of Gujarat province, is Adani's first large project in the renewable energy sector.

Adani officials said the group plans to expand the plant’s capacity to 100 MW. Adani is India’s largest private thermal power producer.

"We are pleased to dedicate country's largest solar plant to the nation, said Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani.

The plant’s first six units with an output of 2640 MW were completed in June 2011. Adani plans to generate 16,500 MW of power by 2015 and 20,000 MW by 2020.
