Azure Power won bid to develop 46MW rooftop solar for Indian Railways

The project will be across 11 states.

Azure Power, a solar project developer, has won bids to develop 46 MW of rooftop solar for the Indian Railways. The projects will be spread across 11 Indian states, according to Mercom Capital Group.

Out of the total award of 46 MW, 20 MW has been awarded by the Northern Railways division, 10 MW by the Western Railways division, 10 MW by the North-Central Railways division, and 3 MW each by the North Western Railways division and the Rail Coach Factory division, the company stated in a release.

The tender was conducted by Railway Energy Management Company on behalf of Indian Railways and is a 'Make in India' project, stated Mercom’s source at Azure Power.

For these projects the power purchase agreement (PPA) will be signed with Indian Railways for their respective locations for 25 years. The average tariff is Rs.4.63 (~$0.07)/kWh with an additional capital incentive of Rs.933.5 million (~$14 million) upon commissioning.

Mercom previously reported that Azure Power installed the first phase of a 14 MW solar rooftop allocation for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

According to Mercom’s India Solar Project Tracker, Azure Power has commissioned rooftop solar projects aggregating 21.9 MW, and rooftop solar projects aggregating 83.9 MW are under development. This brings their total portfolio to more than 100 MW in the country.
