Taiwan's solar generation hits all-time high of 2GW in September

Record-high temperatures boosted solar PV generation.

The sizzling-hot weather in Taiwan recorded in early September pushed its total solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation upwards to 2GW, higher than the figures of nuclear power plants, local media report.

On 2 September, solar power generation accounted for 5.89% of the power supply, surpassing the total generation capacity of the country’s three largest nuclear power plants for the first time.

According to Taiwan Power’s (Taipower) calculations, power consumption on 2 September reached 35.2GW, whilst the maximum power supply was at 39.6GW, translating to a reserve margin of 13.19%.

Taiwan is looking to inject more solar power in the energy mix. The Ministry of Economic Affairs' Bureau of Energy (BOE) has devised a new two-year solar PV promotion plan with targets of 3.7GW by end-2019, 6.5GW by end-2020, and 20GW by 2025.
