Here's what the industrial infrastructure badly needs

Clue: advanced work packaging.

In a release from Bentley, it was revealed that their ConstructSim software has been revolutionary for its ability to facilitate the creation of work packages as well as a Virtual Construction Model that provides unprecedented visibility into the planned and executed work.

This product has generated critical industry acclaim. It was recognized as a Plant Engineering Product of the Year in 2009 and two of the three finalists for 2013 “Innovation in Construction” Be Inspired Awards were selected by the Jurors for their effective use of ConstructSim.

Bentley is leveraging that experience and expertise to introduce a holistic solution for industrial construction in early 2014 – ProjectWise Construction Work Package Server – that will provide unprecedented advantages and benefits.

Available as an on-site server deployment or as a Bentley Managed Service, ProjectWise Construction Work Package Server is a system of software and services that will be used by industrial project delivery teams to improve productivity and increase predictability and safety by consolidating construction information, providing even more advanced automation of work packages and delivering real-time project reporting and status insight.

This product’s advanced automation of work packaging is particularly innovative and valuable in industrial construction. Advocated by the Construction Industry Institute (CII), Work Packaging is an emerging industry best practice for defining the flow of information exchange between engineering, construction, commissioning and handover, with work packages serving as the unit of that information exchange.

In a case study published in July, 2013, the Construction Industry Institute (CII) found that with advanced work packaging (AWP), “total install cost may be reduced by 10 percent with significant improvements to site productivity and schedule performance.”

Furthermore, CII found that advanced work packaging can also improve safety.

One multi-phase project recorded one safety incident per month pre-AWP - after implementing AWP they went “over one million hours with zero safety incidents.”

While the value of work packaging is significant, implementation of such a process is difficult due to the challenges associated with gathering the necessary diverse information and the tedious manual processes involved in creating work packages.
