South Koreans to build Philippine solar power plant

It will be the largest solar power plant in the Philippines.

BWST, a unit of Korean manufacturer Yu Jin Optical Electronics Inc, said it plans to build the solar power project in the town of Porac located in Pampanga province in central Luzon. The solar plant will have a capacity of 150 MW and will require an investment of US$500 million.

The plant’s capacity could be increased, said Sung Ho Shin, BWST planning director. He said the plant will be built in phases, with the first phase having an initial capacity of 50 MW. Yu Jin Optical Electronics makes winding coils, device pick up coils and other electronic parts. Its facility is located at the Cavite Economic Zone in Cavite province, south of Metro Manila.

When completed, BWST’s solar plant will be the Philippines’ biggest solar facility. “Our company has a strong financial (backing). We are going to show the Philippine government how we can make our project a success story,” Shin said.
