Indian state of Haryana to get 2000MW hydropower from Bhutan

The government of Haryana is setting up a joint venture hydel power project in Bhutan.

This will be implemented in partnership with the Bhutan government.

The chief minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, came back after two day delegation to Bhutan and have reached an understanding on pursuing a mutually beneficial economic collaboration across a number of sectors, especially power.

The Bhutan government has agreed in principle to partner with the State of Haryana in harnessing its hydropower potential.

"The state government will invest to set up the project and sign PPA to buy power from Bhutan," Mr Hooda said.

The chief minister of Haryana, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said that the Indian state would get 1500 to 2000 MW power from Bhutan in next four to five years at rates economical than thermal power.

Factors like inadequate supply of coal have affected power supply in the state despite enhancing additional power generation capacity from 4033 MW in 2005 to 8497 MW during a period of last seven years.

In return, the Government of Haryana has offered to collaborate with the Royal Government of Bhutan in the development of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry & Livestock, Urban planning and Industrial & Infrastructure development sectors of economy through provision of technical assistance, capacity building, institutional partnerships, exchange programmes, technology and knowledge sharing, research and development, supporting establishment of pilot projects and catalyzing investments through mutually agreed measures and instruments.
