Russian-built Indian nuclear plant to operate next year

Atomstroyexport has completed the construction of India's first large nuclear power plant at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu. It will be connected to the grid early next year.

The firm carrying out the project with Nuclear Power Corporation of India has installed the main equipment at the 1,000MW reactor, and various tests are currently being conducted to make it operational.

The plant features a passive heat removing system for the first time in any nuclear power plant in the world, according to Atomstroyexport, Russia's state-run nuclear firm.

India signed an agreement for the project in 1988 but it remained in limbo for ten years due to political and economic upheaval in the Soviet Union and its breakup in 1991, reports the Economic Times.
