Alternergy begins power generation at 128MW wind project

Project expected to generate 283.5 GWh annually when fully operational.

Philippine renewable energy developer Alternergy Holdings Corporation has started generating electricity from its 128MW Tanay Wind Project, making it the first wind project awarded under the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program II (GEAP II) to deliver power to the Luzon grid.

The project’s wind turbines have begun transmitting electricity through its newly energised six-hectare substation, which is connected to the National Grid

Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) 500kV transmission backbone.

Awarded under GEAP II in July 2023, the Tanay Wind Project is Alternergy’s largest wind development in Luzon to date.

The project is expected to generate around 283.5 GWh of renewable electricity annually once fully operational, enough to power about 118,125 households and avoid approximately 197,780 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

Alternergy president Gerry Magbanua said the project’s first power generation marks the completion of years of work involving employees, contractors, financing partners, government agencies, local governments and host communities.

The company said the project has also created jobs and economic opportunities in its host communities during development and construction.

The Tanay Wind Project is one of two wind assets backed by A Brown Company Inc.’s P2.3b investment in Alternergy’s wind projects.
