India posts record 3-GW solar open access in Q2

On a half-year basis, installations reached nearly 6 GW.

India added 3 gigawatts (GW) of solar open access capacity in the second quarter, the highest quarterly addition on record, according to a Mercom India Research report. 

The report noted this represents an increase of 10% quarter over quarter (QoQ) and 0.2% year over year (YoY).

On a half-year basis, installations reached nearly 6 GW, up 42% YoY compared to 4 GW a year prior.

The report said that installation activity was influenced by developers' accelerated procurement and commissioning, and the enforcement of sourcing requirements under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers List-II.

As of June 2026, cumulative installed solar open access capacity stood at 36 GW.

Karnataka led the market with a 21% share, followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra at 16% each. Together, the top five states accounted for 77% of cumulative capacity

Despite the concentration of operating capacity, Mercom said the development pipeline remains substantial.
