TEPCO eyes one of Japan's largest offshore wind farms: report

It is eyeing a European offshore wind partner and total project spending worth $9.2b.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (TEPCO) is eyeing one of Japan’s largest offshore wind power plants, The Yomiuri Shimbun reports.

The wind farm is expected to be located in Choshi, Chiba Prefecture and generate over 1 million kW. This follows TEPCO’s aim to install more renewables and hit its 7GW target in Japan.

The report adds that TEPCO will collaborate with a European offshore wind power maker and spend $9.2b to install 200 wind turbines offshore, which can each produce 5,000kW and power 300,000 households. The company plans to sell generated electricity through the feed-in-tariff (FIT) system.

The company is scheduled to start commercially operating offshore wind power this month by generating 2,400kW off Choshi. This will be the first time for the fixed bottom type to be in operation in the country.

TEPCO is making up for the costs of decommissioning reactors and cleaning up the radioactive substances at the Fukushima power plant.
