Shizen Malaysia, Top Glove enter PPA for 10MWp rooftop-solar project

This will reduce Top Glove’s CO2 emission by around 13,000 tonnes annually.

Shizen Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the group company of Japan-based Shizen Energy Inc. in Southeast Asia, executed a second long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for the installation of a 10 megawatt-peak rooftop solar plant for manufacturing firm Top Glove Corporation Bhd.

In a statement, Shizen said the solar rooftop project is located in Peninsular Malaysia on the rooftop of Top Glove’s factories, adding that the clean energy that will be supplied will contribute to reducing the manufacturer's average electricity cost and lower its carbon footprint.

“Given the growing awareness of the benefits of renewable energy (RE) and its importance in lessening global warming, we are confident that more industry players will turn to RE at the forefront of their strategic plans and drive a committed environmentalist agenda contributing to Malaysia’s net-zero carbon initiatives,” Shizen Malaysia CEO Alvin Koh said.

Top Glove said the PPA will bring its total solar capacity to 15.47MWp and will save about 13,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to planting around 400,000 trees to absorb the number of emissions that can be avoided.  

Top Glove is the largest gloves manufacturer globally, accounting for 26% of the global market share, and owns and operates 49 manufacturing facilities in Malaysia, Thailand, China and Vietnam, according to Shizen.

The first long-term PPA for a rooftop solar plant with the manufacturing company was signed in November last year.
