India’s largest floating solar project in Telangana starts operations

Located in Ramagundam, the plant has a 100MW capacity.

NTPC has commissioned the largest floating solar photovoltaic (PV) project in India with a 100-megawatt (MW) capacity in Ramagundam in Peddapalli District in Telangana.

In a statement, NTPC said the project, which floats over 600 acres of reservoir, would help avoid 4.36 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions during the life of the project.

The company said floating solar projects can potentially save water by reducing evaporation losses to 70%. The 100MW project could save two billion litres of water annually which is enough to meet the yearly water requirements of around 10,000 households.

NTPC has commissioned 222MW of floating solar projects in total and 40MW projects are in the construction stage.

Aside from this, is also planning to create a renewable portfolio which could be as large as the thermal portfolio, and increased its renewable target to 60 gigawatts (GW) from 30GW by 2032, in line with the government’s target of 500GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.

It will be constructing ground-mounted solar projects, floating solar, as well as wind and hybrid projects to achieve its target.
