Russia to build 2 nuke plants for Bangladesh
Bangladesh is set to sign a feasibility study contract with Russia soon to implement the country's first ever nuclear power plants.
The two plants will have a total capacity of 2000 megawatt, and will be put up at Rooppur, 125 km northwest of capital Dhaka.
Russia has agreed to provide assistance in the setting up of the two nuclear units. Under the agreement, the Russian government would provide all necessary support and infrastructure development to build the plant and supply necessary fuel to run the plant and also take back the spent fuel.
The nuclear power plants will feature the latest 'third generation' technology from Russia, which provides for the installation of five-layer security measures, officials said.
Bangladesh is expected to commission a nuclear power plant by 2017-18 if every thing goes well.
The government will establish an information centre in Dhaka to create public awareness among the people about nuclear energy, which is a pre-requisite of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said Bangladesh Atoic Energy Commission Chairman, ASM Firoz.
A technical team of Russia is visiting Dhaka to select the site of the information centre and to finalise some technical bits.
