Mitsubishi, ITB extend collaboration for Indonesia's decarbonisation solutions

This partnership will support Indonesia’s decarbonisation goals.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and Indonesia’s Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) entered a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to extend their collaboration to conduct joint research on clean energy solutions that will help Indonesia’s decarbonisation.

Under the five-year MOU, the activities the parties will undertake include feasibility studies, investigations, validations, and research and development (R&D) for technologies supporting Indonesia’ energy transition.

MHI said in the statement that the research results will be the foundation for discussions for the establishment of a joint R&D centre.

“Through this continued partnership with ITB, we seek to develop clean energy solutions that will accelerate decarbonisation in Indonesia. I am looking forward to a fruitful collaboration with ITB to achieve our mission net zero,” MHI’s Head of Energy Transition and Power Headquarters Ken Kawai said.

MHI and ITB entered an MOU in 2020 which allowed for a joint feasibility studies on emerging energy sources including hydrogen and ammonia, and air quality control systems and microgrid solutions.

They also collaborated in training Indonesia’s future engineers through joint lectures on topics such as big data analysis, biomass, integrated coal gasification combined cycle, hydrogen, and air quality control systems.

Indonesia plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 29% by 2030, and reach 23% renewable energy use by 2025, Mitsubishi said, citing data from the International Renewable Energy Agency.

Indonesia's Evolving Energy Sector

Home to over 278 million people, Indonesia has seen rapid urbanisation and economic development in the last decade. With those came increased pressure on the national grid. Since 2010, primary energy demand has increased by 3% per year. In 2019, the country recorded a record-breaking 2,404 TWh of primary energy usage.

Setting the Pace for A Cleaner 2022

“Let’s have no illusions: if commitments fall short by the end of this COP, countries must revisit their national climate plan and policies. Not every five years. Every year. Every moment.” Those words by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres echoed through the hallways of the COP26 climate conference in November 2021.

Flexibility is crucial for a sustainable energy transition

There has been a constant refrain in my conversations with customers and partners from around the APAC region: keeping electricity supply stable and affordable for end users is the top priority. From there, the chats often turn to how we can achieve this while also heeding growing calls to make power generation cleaner.

Path to sustainable Singapore starts with cleaner energy

Climate action took center stage in Singapore’s recently announced budget, an acknowledgement by authorities that true societal progress can take place only when we care for the planet. A major item on the agenda, the Singapore Green Plan 2030 is a mandate for everyone with implications across businesses, communities and each of us as individuals.
