Korea’s first commercial-scale offshore wind project begins power generation
Commercial operations are expected next year.
The 96 megawatt Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 located off the coast of Shin-an has delivered its first power a year after construction started early 2023, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) said.
In a statement, CIP said commercial operations are expected in the first quarter of 2025. Once fully operational, the project can provide power to approximately 60,000 households.
Jeonnam Offshore Wind 1 is developed jointly by CIP through its fund Copenhagen Infrastructure III, SK Innovation E&S, and Copenhagen Offshore Partners.
“First power from Jeonnam 1 is a landmark for CIP, our partners and the offshore wind industry in South Korea. It showcases our strong project execution capabilities - and we are very proud to have reached this significant milestone in collaboration with our partners,” said Thomas Wibe Poulsen, partner in CIP.
South Korea, with its significant offshore wind potential, is one of Asia Pacific's largest markets. The country aims to install 14.3 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2030 to support its 2050 carbon neutrality goal.
CIP currently has a 5 GW offshore wind development pipeline since entering the South Korean market in 2018.
