Sevan’s Wind Turbine Foundation offers stability in harsh offshore environments

The technology adopts mall Waterplane Area Cylindrical Hull design.

Sevan's Wind Turbine Foundation is transforming the offshore wind market by providing adaptability and stability as it is designed to accommodate harsh environments.

“We have been working with our concept now for 20 years. We have experience with the design and construction of the Sevan cylindrical hull for the oil and gas sector,” Frank Hopen, managing director of Sevan, told Asian Power at the Smart Energy Week.

“With the SWACH (Small Waterplane Area Cylindrical Hull) design, we are now bringing the unique features from Sevan hull into the wind industry,” he added.

The foundation, based on Sevan's cylindrical hull design, enhances stability by reducing water area.

The managing director also pointed out the challenges faced by existing wind farm concepts, stressing the importance of robust, mass-producible designs for long-term success.

“We see that still no wind farm has proven a successful operation for many years and no concept has proven to be optimised for mass production. We see that this is critical for the design to be robust, simple, and suitable for mass production,” Hopen explained.

Whilst specific investment figures were not disclosed, he revealed engineering efforts invested in the project since its inception in 2016.

“We have done more than 2025 monitoring campaigns for the Sevan hull itself for oil and gas applications. So we are not starting from scratch,” Hopen said.

Aside from the foundation, Hopen said the firm has also developed a substation and is exploring additional renewable energy initiatives, including power hubs and carbon capture technologies.
