Construction kicks off on RM12b Jimah East Power project in Malaysia

It will generate 2,000MW.

Construction of the RM12 billion Jimah East Power (JEP) plant project has kicked off with a recent first concrete pouring ceremony in Jimah, Port Dickson, a strategic site crucial to the security of power supply in Peninsula Malaysia.

Two greenfield power units to be constructed at the site will add another 2,000 MW of generation capacity and will eventually increase Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) generation capacity from the current 22,747.53 MW to 25,198.53 MW by end 2020.

TNB owns 70 percent of the project through the acquisition of Edra Global Energy Bhd's stake in Jimah East Power Sdn Bhd (JEP) from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) for RM46.98 million in July 2015. The project was formerlly known as Project 3B.

Japanese conglomerate, Mitsui & Co Ltd and Chugoku Electric Power, one of Japan’s biggest regional power utilities are TNB's strategic partner in JEP with each owning 15 percent of the remaining stake in the company.

The JEP project will add one more high tech, ultra-supercritical coal plant (comprising 2 power units) to TNB’s generation portfolio, expanding its operational portfolio of high value generation assets to a total of three ultra-supercritical coal plants (the others are Manjung 4 & Manjung 5). This will strengthen TNB’s domestic and international generation capacity and operational track record.
