Macau to build power substations in old neighborhoods

Chooses eight sites to meet rising electricity demand.

The Macau government said building temporary substations is an immediate solution to tackle pressing needs. It plans to select a total of eight public outdoor spaces for building substations.

Two temporary substations are expected to be built in the Mercado Municipal da Taipa and the Rua Do Regedor, respectively. The government is also considering selecting sites that are next to small-size parks, public toilets, garbage rooms, alleys and parking spaces.

The Office for the Development of the Energy Sector stressed that the government has requested that electric utility Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM) submit a middle-to-long-term scheme for distributing middle-low pressure electricity in its mid-term plan.

This is needed so that the government can reserve land in urban planning for building permanent substations.

At present, each outdoor substation in Macau occupies an area of some 10.65 square meters with a capacity of 1000 kVA. According to the GDSE, these substations have the advantages of low noise, small building size and fast equipment installation.
