South Korea and Malaysia aim for CCS cooperation

The Shepherd CCS Project could be their global anchor project.

South Korea and Malaysia eye cooperation on carbon capture and storage (CC) with the two markets seeing the need for a bilateral agreement on cross-border transport and storage of carbon dioxide.

In a statement, South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Director General for Energy Policy Choi Yeon-Woo and Malaysia’s Deputy Secretary General for the Ministry of Economy Luqman during the discussion also decided to push further with the intergovernmental discussion, taking into account institutional conditions such as international rules and agreements.

Choi also requested Malaysia’s active support and interest in establishing the public-private joint Shepherd CCS Project as the global anchor project.

The ministry said South Korea’s CCS industry is prioritising securing key technology and talents, growing specialisation firms, and creating markets by securing storage sites locally and abroad.
