Besino Environment Co., Ltd. wins big at Asian Water Awards 2024

The company took home victories in three major categories, including the Water Company Excellence Award - China.

Besino Environment Co., Ltd., a leading force in the water industry, took home three prestigious honours at the Asian Water Awards 2024 – Water Company Excellence Award - China, Water Technology Excellence Award - Industrial - China, and Water Quality Improvement Project of the Year - Indonesia.

These accolades highlight the company's dedication to innovative solutions in water management, environmental sustainability, and excellence in operations across the Asia-Pacific region.

Outstanding leadership in China’s water industry

Besino Environment Co., Ltd. earned the Water Company Excellence Award - China for its exceptional portfolio of 23 long-term projects spanning 11 provinces and its ability to treat over 2.5 million cubic metres of water daily. The company's impressive operational expertise, paired with its commitment to continuous improvement and sustainability, has solidified its reputation as a leader in the Chinese water industry.

A prime example of Besino's innovation is the Nanchong project, where the company successfully recycles 60% of treated wastewater for industrial use. This breakthrough highlights Besino’s dedication to resource conservation and sustainable water management. Further, Besino's efforts to engage with the community are evident through initiatives like the Wangxiaoying Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), which serves as an educational centre, welcoming over 6,000 visitors annually to raise environmental awareness.

Besino’s achievements in 2023, such as saving RMB18.5m (US$2.62m) in energy costs through strategic solar panel installations and equipment upgrades, underscore its focus on innovation. The company's ability to adapt and integrate advanced foreign technologies like Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP) and particle separation equipment from Germany, coupled with strong partnerships with leading academic institutions, has enabled it to push boundaries in water treatment.

Innovative Solutions for Industrial Wastewater

Besino also won the Water Technology Excellence Award - Industrial - China for its collaboration with Wansheng Chemical at their new Shandong facility, a global leader in phosphorus-based flame retardants.

The facility faces the challenge of treating wastewater streams from 20 workshops with a range of pollutants. Besino designed an innovative, tailored solution to address the diverse wastewater streams, showcasing its technological prowess in complex industrial applications.

The approach involved classifying the wastewater into four main groups, each treated using specific technologies such as Mechanical Vapor Recompression (MVR) for high-salinity streams and Wet Oxidation Ditch (WAO) for high-phenol and phosphorus-laden streams. This categorisation ensured optimal treatment whilst reducing operational costs by 30% compared to similar processes at other facilities.

Additionally, Besino incorporated diffusive dialysis membrane technology to recover hydrochloric acid and a lime-reaction process to remove formaldehyde, reducing the bio-toxicity for downstream biological treatment. The treated bio-effluent was further processed through Reverse Osmosis (RO), allowing the recycling of 50% of the treated water, demonstrating Besino's commitment to water conservation and resource optimisation.

The success of the Wansheng project was achieved through innovative design and a new business model where Besino took full responsibility for project management, ensuring smooth implementation of cutting-edge technologies.

Protecting marine biodiversity with sustainable coking wastewater treatment

Besino's third win, Water Quality Improvement Project of the Year - Indonesia, recognised the company’s role in safeguarding the Coral Triangle region, home to one of the world’s most biodiverse marine ecosystems, through its innovative wastewater treatment at the IMIP industrial park.

The park’s coking facility posed significant environmental risks due to the highly polluted wastewater generated during coke production, a challenge magnified by the absence of specific discharge standards for the coking industry in Indonesia.

Besino's solution was a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility with a capacity of 800 m³/h, equivalent to the load of a municipal plant serving 1 million people. The plant incorporates advanced processes like oil separation, dissolved air flotation, and a modified Anoxic/Oxic (AO) biological tank, utilising magnetic suspension blowers to reduce energy consumption. Besino also creatively minimised the land required for the facility by integrating the biological tanks and clarifiers, a vital innovation given the park’s space constraints.

The outcome was a zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) system, ensuring that all treated water is reused in the coking process, saving over 4 million cubic meters of water annually. Additionally, the sludge from the treatment is recycled back into the coking process, contributing to a “zero-discharge” green model. This groundbreaking project not only preserves precious water resources but also mitigates the environmental impact on marine life and coral reefs.

Besino’s triple win at the Asian Water Awards 2024 is a testament to its leadership in the water industry. Through its dedication to innovation, sustainability, and technological excellence, the company has consistently delivered transformative solutions that improve water quality, conserve resources, and protect the environment.

The Asian Water Awards, now in its second year, is a prestigious award programme that recognises outstanding achievements in the water sector throughout Asia. It is a platform for highlighting innovative projects, initiatives, and companies that have significantly contributed to the region's water management, conservation, and sustainability.
