Fukushima Natural Gas Power Plant No.2 unit starts operations

The two units have a total capacity of 1.18GW.

The 590MW second unit of Japan Petroleum Exploration’s (JAPEX) Fukushima Natural Gas Power Plant has begun commercial operation, according to a press release.

As the basement of the project, the power plant had been under construction at Soma Port No. 4 Warf, since the investment decision in October 2016 by FGP and its shareholders: JAPEX, Mitsui & Co., Osaka Gas, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical and Hokkaido Electric Power.

Together with the first unit’s start of commercial operation on 30 April, the power plant’s generation capacity is a total of 1.18GW.

The No.2 liquefied natural gas (LNG) tank with 230,000 kL capacity and additional regasification equipment of the second constriction phase in Soma LNG terminal was also transferred to full-scale operation.

Under the contract with FGP, JAPEX conducts management of the facilities constructed in the second construction phase, as well as storage and regasification of LNG fuel used for power generation, and supply of regasified gas to the power plant.
