Australia to roll out 1st auction for largest renewable tender in May

The tender rounds will run until 2027.

Australia will launch the first auction under its largest single renewable tender in the country later this month.

In a statement, the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water said a market briefing will be released for the tender process this month, with the tender round running for around every six months until 2027.

The largest renewable tender has a capacity of six gigawatts (GW) for the National Electricity Market.

The tender will take place through the Capacity Investment Scheme which aims to develop 32 GW of new energy infrastructure between now and 2030.

These projects will bring the market share of renewable energy in the Australian market’s grid to 82%, supported by gas, storage and transmission.

Of the total capacity, 2.2 GW will be dedicated to New South Wales, whilst South Australi and Western Australia will be allocated 300 megawatts (MW) and 500 MW, respectively.
