China’s RE sources to meet all new energy demand by 2025
Renewables could possibly meet all new power demand with continued capacity growth.
As China further increases its renewable energy capacity, it is possible that it will be able to meet its new electricity demand this year.
“With increased renewable energy capacity, it is increasingly possible that by 2025, renewable sources will meet all new electricity demand. This paves the way for China’s power sector to achieve peak emissions by 2025,” Greenpeace East Asia Beijing-based project lead Gao Yuhe said.
It has been reported that 14 out of 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in China currently have new energy sources dominating their power generation structures.
Gao said this marks a significant shift as the East Asian superpower aims for an additional 200 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy installations by 2025.
“The potential for renewable energy development in China by 2025 far exceeds this target, and the actual installed capacity will most likely surpass it,” she noted.
Gao said developed provinces in the eastern region, where the energy demand is high, are specifically well-positioned to accelerate the deployment of distributed photovoltaic projects, making way for the reduction in coal power reliance.
