Japan’s nuclear energy generation up 9.6% in 2024
Capacity was up 2.6 points from the previous year.
The nuclear power sector in Japan has seen an improvement last year, with its electricity generation increasing 9.6% to 88.87 terrawatt-hours in 2024.
According to data gathered by Atoms in Japan, the country’s average capacity factor of domestic nuclear power plants was also up 2.6 points to 30.6% last year.
Both of these are the highest levels since 2015 when new regulatory standards for reactors came into effect following the 2011 quake that hit Japan.
So far, 14 units or 13.25 gigawatts of boiling water reactors have been restarted. The recent ones were Onagawa-2, owned and operated by the Tohoku Electric Power Co., and Shimane-2, owned and operated by the Chugoku Electric Power Co.
Both reactors have returned to commercial operations.
