New gas field could power 5.7 million Filipino households annually
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos announced the discovery of a new gas field.
Philippines president Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the discovery of the Malampaya East 1 (MAE-1) gas field, located 5 kilometers east of the existing Malampaya Field of the Palawan province.
The new reservoir holds approximately 98 billion cubic feet of gas, enough to generate 14 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This discovery can power over 5.7 million households, 9,500 buildings, or nearly 200,000 schools for one year.
The MAE-1 field is part of the Malampaya Phase 4 drilling campaign, with initial tests showing high productivity, similar to the original Malampaya wells.
In addition to natural gas, the field contains condensate, which can aid in stabilising the country's power supply.
Marcos highlighted that the project, led by Filipino workers, was completed without environmental incidents.
The next steps will include further exploration and development of additional wells, including the Camago-3 and Pag-asa wells.
