Tsuruga-2 nuclear plant fails to meet regulator standards
This has been offline since 2011.
Japan’s Tsuruga-2 Nuclear Power Plant has been found to be non-compliant with national regulatory standards, and thus cannot be restarted after being offline since 2011.
According to the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, the earthquake and tsunami examination of Tsuruga-2 specifically focused on the K Fault, a fault near the D-1 crushed rock zone. This fault runs directly beneath the Tsuruga-2 reactor building and is located within the nuclear power plant's premises.
In its examination, the Nuclear Regulation Authority confirmed that it could not be denied that the K Fault had been active since the late Pleistocene (about 120,000 years ago), nor could it be denied that the K Fault extended to the D-1 fault zone of crushed rock running directly under the Tsuruga-2 reactor building.
Japan Atomic Power Company, owner and operator of the plant, said it was disappointed and that it would make another application to restart Tsuruga-2.
