India’s installed capacity reaches 428.3 GW in 2023

It added 28.8 GW of capacity from March 2022 to December 2023.

India’s power sector has deployed a total installed capacity of 428.3 GW capacity as of 2023, with the private sector accounting for around 219.7 GW.

Data from the Union Minister of Power and New & Renewable Energy also showed that the State Sector holds 106.3 GW of the installed capacity, whilst the Central Sector operates 102.3 GW.

From March 2022 to December 2023 alone, the country has added 28.8 GW to its installed capacity.

To address the increasing power demand, India is expecting to add 469.6 GW of power by 2031-2032.

Per sector, the country anticipates adding 93.4 GW of thermal capacity during the period with 26.4 MW under construction.

The country is also expected to see 42 GW additions during the period in the hydropower capacity, 12.2 GW in nuclear, and 322 GW in GW in renewables.

India aims to reach over 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030.
