AboitizPower launches 49 MW hybrid BESS project

This is the first battery project in Southeast Asia that was built on a floating platform.

Aboitiz Power Corporation, through its subsidiary Therma Marine, inaugurated a 49-megawatt (MW) hybrid battery energy storage system built on a floating platform, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.

In a statement, AboitizPower said the project, located in Maco, Davao de Oro, will complement Therma Marine’s existing diesel engines through ancillary services that will help in providing uninterrupted electricity.

“The power barge that TMI currently operates has been in Maco, Davao de Oro since 1994. It was installed as part of the solution to address the then power crisis in Mindanao,” AboitizPower Thermal Chief Operating Officer Ronaldo Ramos said.

“Thirty years later, who would’ve thought that we’d still find ourselves in the same mission of supporting our beloved Mindanao, this time with an innovative twist and a different need to address – the reserve requirements of the grid,” he added.

Ramos also said that the project is important due to the increasing power demand in the country and the launch of the Mindanao-Visayas interconnection project.
