ENEC launches start-up reactor at Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant

The launch of Unit 4 has contributed 25% to UAE’s electricity.

Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC), through its operating and maintenance subsidiary Nawah Energy Company, has commenced operations of Unit 4 at the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant.

The launch has led to the generation of 25% of electricity in the UAE, deploying the largest single source of clean electricity in the territory.

Unit 4 of Barakah Plant will also be integrated into the national electricity grid through a testing phase to increase its output to full capacity.

After testing is completed, Unit 4 will lead the total capacity of the Barakah Plant to 5,600 megawatts (MW) of zero-carbon emission electricity.

ENEC has successfully delivered four units of the Barakah Plant, with operational teams launching a unit each year since 2020. Additionally, the Barakah Plant has utilised four APR-1400 pressurised water reactors with the capability of producing over 1,400 megawatts of clean electricity.

“Our journey reflects a bold vision, coupled with rigorous standards of quality and safety, to effectively deploy civil nuclear energy as a proven, viable solution for tackling energy security and climate change,” Mohamed Al Hammadi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ENEC, said.
