NTPC launches 50 MW solar project in Sri Lanka
This will expand its presence whilst also diversifying the country’s energy mix.
NTPC Limited has launched its 50 megawatt (MW) solar power project in Sri Lanka.
In a statement, the company said the project, extendable to 120 MW, is part of NTPC efforts to expand its reach to India’s neighbouring countries.
This solar project is being established through Trincomalee Power Company Limited (TPCL), a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC, India, and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Sri Lanka, with an envisaged investment of $100m.
The project will help diversify Sri Lanka’s energy mix, reducing its dependence on fossil fuels. It will also avoid carbon emissions of around 200,000 tonnes annually.
A power purchase agreement by TPCL with CEB and the implementation agreement with the Government of Sri Lanka for Phase I of the 50 MW have been signed.
