India's pumped storage capacity to surge to 55 GW by 2031-2032

Around 2.5 GW are under construction.

The pumped storage capacity of India is expected to reach around 55 gigawatts (GW) by 2031 to 2032 from the current 4.7 GW, according to the Ministry of Power.

India has around 2.5 GW of pumped storage capacity under construction.

Around 50 GW of other similar projects are under different stages of development according to the ministry.

“Given the ongoing energy transitions in the country, the development of Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) assumes importance for providing greater inertia and balancing power to the grid. PSPs are also known as ‘the Water Battery’, which is an ideal complement to modern clean energy systems,” it said.

India, which aims to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel generation capacity by 2030 has 157.32 GW of renewables capacity, accounting for 40.1% of the total electricity capacity.
