Massive Tibetan hydropower dam to go online in October
The Pondo Water Control Project is Tibet’s equivalent of the Three Gorge Dam.
The largest water control project in the Tibet Autonomous Region is expected to start generating electricity this year. Construction of the Pondo Water Control Project located on the Lhasa River has gone as scheduled and will begin operation in October.
Construction on the massive project began in 2008 with an investment of US$728 million It is expected to be totally completed by 2016.
Consisting of a reservoir and a power station, the project is designed to irrigate 43,520 hectares of farmland and generate 599 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually upon completion.
