K- ELECTRIC 560 MW BIN QASIM POWER STATION-II PAKISTAN secures wins at Asian Power Awards 2024

The company earned awards for its Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) infrastructure, which brought significant advancements on all three of its gas turbines.

K- ELECTRIC was hailed with accolades for Gas Power Project of the Year - Pakistan and Power Plant Upgrade of the Year - Pakistan at the Asian Power Awards 2024.

K-ELECTRIC's Bin Qasim Power Station II (BQPS-II) developed the RLNG infrastructure—an upgrade that allows RLNG to be used as a secondary fuel, ensuring both availability and reliability. By utilising PLL RLNG, the plant has eliminated the need for 8.5 MW natural gas compressors, consequently reducing auxiliary load. As a result, the plant's net efficiency (HHV) improved from 41.33% to 42.73%, leading to approximate cost savings of 0.96 Rs per kilowatt-hour for consumers. This improvement has also enhanced the plant’s ranking in the economic merit order, increasing its overall utilisation.

In 2023, BQPS-II successfully conducted an online fuel changeover between natural gas and RLNG whilst operating at load conditions. This innovation eliminates the startup and shutdown costs typically associated with conventional fuel changeovers. This has saved consumers around PKR13.35m (about US$47,000) per year by avoiding 15 fuel changeovers. Moreover, this capability enhances the plant's operational flexibility and efficiency.

BQPS-II’s strategy focusses on dynamic operational capabilities that adapt to shifting market conditions, ensuring reliable and economical power delivery to customers. The plant stands out not only for its technological innovations—such as RLNG integration and online fuel changeovers—but also for their tangible impacts on efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and reliability.

These advancements highlight BQPS-II's role as a leader in the power generation sector and provide a model for sustainable and resilient energy solutions in Pakistan.

Another key achievement made by the company was the increased operational flexibility through the on-load capability to switch fuels, which saves more than 3000MWh/year from 15 fuel changeover-related startups. The company has also recorded a lower number of startups due to fuel changeovers, which have reduced loading cycles and hence fatigue-related failures.
