PT Shenhua Guohua Pembangkitan Jawa Bali wins two top prizes at Asian Power Awards 2023

The company has remained compliant with environmental regulations and committed to its corporate responsibility.

Power generation company PT Shenhua Guohua Pembangkitan Jawa Bali (SGPJB) brought home two major wins at the Asian Power Awards 2023 for the successful operations of its Jawa 7 Coal-Fired Power Plant (CFPP) and its Desa Harapan Community Empowerment Programme.

In 2022, two units of Jawa 7 recorded an Equivalence Availability Factor (EAF) of 98.3%, showing the high operational readiness of the CFPP. Jawa 7 produced more than 11.000 GWh the same year, contributing to providing ± 5% of the total electricity in the Java-Madura-Bali system.

As a part of the China Energy Group overseas investment project in Indonesia through the “Belt and Road Initiative,” Jawa 7 is designed to promote eco-friendly green development that implements various Clean Coal Technology (CCT), ensuring its operations are safe, economical, and clean with high efficiency to secure energy supply for high quality economic and social development. The Ultra Super Critical (USC) technology in the boiler operates at a very high pressure, providing excellent efficiencies close to 45%, which is very high amongst other subcritical power plants in Indonesia.

Moreover, there were also other technologies implemented to minimise the emissions, such as low NOx burner, electrostatic precipitator, flue gas desulfurization, and the installation of tubular belt conveyor, windbreaker, and dust suppression.

At such efficiency, the emissions for each kwh of electricity production were also lower. Since 2021, the greenhouse gas emissions produced range from 0,81 to 0,88 kg CO2 equivalence/kwh – below the limit mandated by the Indonesian government.

With these safeguards in check, SGPJB remains compliant with environmental regulations and implements the Occupational Health and Safety Management System to ensure the plant operation of Jawa 7 is safe for the people and the community that leads Jawa 7 brought home the Independent Power Producer of the Year - Indonesia in the awards programme.

Community empowerment scale up

Meanwhile, SGPJB initiated Desa Harapan to optimise the local potential of Terate Village, one of the villages around the Ring-1 area of Jawa 7. The programme was arranged based on Sustainable Development Goals, consisting of direct assistance activities towards villagers by LAZ HARFA’s Field Facilitator in the fields of microfinance, production & marketing of local products, waste management, donation funds, and coaching for honorary teachers.

This programme is an embodiment of SGPJB's commitment to making the world a better place, starting from the closest environment. It also aligned with SGPJB’s commitment to environmental protection as Indonesia’s most environmentally friendly CFPP, operating with high efficiency, low emissions, zero dust, and being water friendly. On 14 July 2022, all of the activities were successfully implemented 100% and helped 3,677 Terate villagers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In order to maintain the sustainability of the community empowerment programme as well as ensure that Jawa 7's operations continue to preserve the surrounding environment and ecology, the management realises the importance of collaboration and synergy with various parties. As such, the 5-Year CSR Programme Road Map has been set as a guideline that is also integrated with Jawa 7’s overall operational goals.

After a comprehensive evaluation in August 2023, SGPJB together with the local village government element and related stakeholders inaugurated the Village of Hope Programme Phase II.

“Further improvement of the programme has been prepared in collaboration with the local government. The synergy of this programme will certainly be able to provide more optimal benefits for the community and ensure sustainable community empowerment in the future,” the company said.

These improvements ensured the programme’s sustainability benefits for the community and brought Desa Harapan to win the ESG Programme of the Year – Indonesia for the second consecutive time.
