Teraju Sepadu Sdn Bhd wins at Asian Power Awards 2025 for landfill biogas project

The landfill biogas-to-energy project is the first in northern Peninsular Malaysia to be recognised on the Asian stage.

Teraju Sepadu Sdn Bhd’s Lahat Sanitary Landfill Biogas-to-Energy Project in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia, has been awarded Biogas-Fired Power Project of the Year - GOLD at the prestigious Asian Power Awards 2025. This recognition highlights not only the project’s technical achievement but also its position as the first landfill-based biogas-to-energy project in northern Peninsular Malaysia, setting a new benchmark for renewable energy innovation in the country and the wider Southeast Asian region.

From the beginning, the project faced formidable challenges. Landfill-gas recovery remains at an early stage in Malaysia, with limited access to qualified contractors, specialised equipment, and stringent environmental and safety requirements unique to sanitary landfills. Despite these barriers, Teraju Sepadu successfully navigated regulatory, technical, and operational complexities to deliver a project that now stands as a major milestone in Malaysia’s renewable energy sector. This success would not have been possible without Malaysia’s progressive renewable energy policies, particularly the support of the Ipoh City Council (MBI), the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) and its Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) programme, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) as the project’s power off-taker. Teraju Sepadu Sdn Bhd also extends its gratitude to partners in Malaysia and to its parent company, Henan BCCY Environmental Energy Co., Ltd., whose expertise and technical resources were instrumental to the project’s success.

Unlike conventional projects that rely on government allocations, this initiative was delivered through a private-funding model, meaning no public funds were used. The company strongly believes that this win-win approach can attract not only capital but also knowledge, technology and environmental benefits for the community—laying the groundwork for larger renewable-energy undertakings in the future.

Teraju Sepadu Sdn Bhd recognises that Waste-to-Energy (WTE) is the ideal long-term solution for zero-landfill and sustainable waste management. Land values are rising, and “zero waste to landfill” is an essential goal. But the reality is that the waste already deposited cannot be undone, and harmful methane is being generated every day. As elders say, “you cannot reach the sky in a single step.” Immediate, workable solutions are needed today to reduce and stop harmful emissions, even as the industry moves steadily toward the WTE era.

Landfill-gas recovery offers exactly that: a proven, immediately deployable system to capture methane, cut greenhouse-gas emissions, and generate clean power, whilst improving the living environment for nearby communities. It is not in opposition to WTE but a necessary stepping stone that bridges the gap, making the transition to full WTE smoother and more cost-effective for developing countries and for Southeast Asia, where high-investment projects can place a heavy burden on public finances.

Teraju Sepadu Sdn Bhd believes this project is not only a milestone for Malaysia but also a valuable reference for Southeast Asia as the region confronts similar challenges in municipal solid-waste management. By applying its expertise in landfill-gas recovery, the company hopes to contribute to both immediate emission reductions and long-term sustainability, helping communities take practical steps today whilst preparing for the waste-management systems of tomorrow.
