Here’s why the last dirty fuel project in Japan was scrapped

The country recently pledged to cut down greenhouse gas emissions by 46% before 2030.

Kansai Electric and Marubeni have cancelled a 1,300 MW coal-fired power project citing the tighter rules imposed by the Japanese government on dirty fuels. This comes as the country looks to make good on its promise to cut down greenhouse gas emissions by 46% by 2030.

The project, located in the Akita prefecture, was scheduled to begin operations in 2024.

With the project cancelled, Japan has no plans to construct new coal-fired power plants. The country, however, still has several coal projects currently under construction.

Earlier, Japan’s biggest coal-fired power plant shut down plans for a 1.2 GW coal-fired power plant in Yamaguchi citing a comprehensive assessment of the changing business environment.
