It’s wind power for New Zealand

New Zealand intends to derive 20% of its renewable energy from wind.

The island currently sources 75% of its power from renewable energy and intends to increase that proportion to 90% by 2025. A new report issued by the New Zealand Wind Energy Association (NZWEA) said wind could easily help the country reach that 90% goal.

NZWEA has suggested that wind power could supply 20% of the nation's power by 2030. It is striving for wind to account for 3.5GW of electricity by 2030.

According to the Global Wind Energy Council, New Zealand’s wind resources have been described as spectacular. Currently, wind energy accounts for 5% of the nation’s power, but the room to grow is tremendous.

Currently, hydro power accounts for two-thirds of New Zealand’s energy. Geothermal energy is increasing in importance but the scarcity of geothermal sites has brought wind power to the fore.
