New LNG power plant to generate 1,750 MW

The Philippines’ largest power distributor and a Japanese firm intend to build one of the largest liquefied natural gas power plants in the Philippines.

Manila Electric Company based in Metro Manila, plans to build the LNG power plant in Quezon province to the south of Manila as part of a plan to meet its growing power requirements within its franchise area.

Acting through a subsidiary Meralco PowerGen Corporation, Meralco is negotiating with Japanese electric utilities provider Chubu Electric Power to build the LNG plant capable of generating from 1,200 to 1,750 megawatts.

Both companies are conducting a grid impact study for the power plant. The GIS is needed to determine if the electricity to be generated by the plant can be absorbed by the grid, and if existing transmission lines can cope with transmitting electricity from the power plant to the substations.
