Indonesia to develop wind power

Will cooperate with the United Nations Development Program for wind projects.

Indonesia and UNDP aim to increase the use of renewable sources in power generation and reduce carbon emissions. The “WHyPGen” program between Indonesia’s science and technology research agency BPPT and UNDP is expected to increase overall electricity production to 19.27 gigawatts per year and reduce carbon emissions by 17.01 metric tons per year by 2015.

Wind energy has the potential to 9.29 GW. Its contribution to the country's power mix is projected to reach 0.1% by 2030.

Indonesia now operates small scale of wind power projects, mostly for research purposes, with a total capacity of 2 MW. The costliness of wind technology has been identified as a factor that hinders development of the power generation in Indonesia.
