ACWA Power inks deal for Uzbekistan wind, green hydrogen projects

It will contribute to Uzbekistan’sgoal to decarbonise 35% of its energy sector by 2030.

ACWA Power signed two agreements for the development of wind and green hydrogen energy projects in Uzbekistan, supporting the country’s decarbonisation goals.

In a statement, ACWA Power said the first set of agreements involves the partnership with Uzbekistan’s national holding company for chemicals, Uzkimyosanoat, through green hydrogen projects.

The first project of its kind in Central Asia, the initial phase of the green hydrogen projects located in the Tashkent region will cost around $100m. It will produce 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for the chemical industry, saving up to 20.4 million cubic metres of natural gas yearly.

The second phase, meanwhile, will have an investment of $4b to ramp up the production to 120,000 tonnes per year. It will save 830 million cubic metres of natural gas and reduce 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

ACWA Power said the project will also include renewable energy technology of over 2.6 gigawatts (GW).

Meanwhile, the second set of agreements involved the signing of financing documents for the Karatau wind farm which has a total investment of around $120m. The 100MW wind project is expected to start operations in February 2025.

The electricity generated by the plant will be supplied exclusively to the National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan for 25 years.
