Greenko Group to develop India’s largest pumped storage project

The project will be completed within 30 months.

Energy company Greenko Group officially inaugurated the construction of its massive 1,440-megawatt (MW) pumped hydro storage project in Madhya Pradesh, the largest in India.

In a statement, Greenko Group said the hydro storage project, located in the Khemla block of Neemuch, is capable of managing a storage capacity of 7.5 hours and being expanded to 1,920 MW, with six hours storage to keep nearly 11 gigawatt-hours (GWh) daily.

It can hold more than 7,000 MW of renewable capacity when integrated with other utilities, upon completion.

Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan takes part in the official unveiling, culminating in the laying of the foundation stone.

The project will have an overall investment of around $1.4b (INR115b) over the next three years, providing 4,800 job opportunities during the construction, and 200 jobs after completion.

An additional amount of around $180,200 (INR15m) will be injected into local community projects for indirect jobs including small infrastructure contracts and hiring of vehicles, amongst others.

Greenko’s large-scale hydro storage serves as an open-loop project, connecting to the existing Gandhi Sagar Reservoir and to a proposed upper reservoir. The project will also include a 35-metre-tall Asphalt Face Rockfill Embankment Dam.

The storage project in Madhya Pradesh is part of the Greenko Group’s initiative to develop storage cloud platforms capable of 100 gigawatt-hours.
