Queensland energy sector test emergency response to gear up in summer

More than 50 energy companies arranged emergency protocols for Queensland’s power supply.

Over 50 primary energy sector representatives have formalised the emergency response arrangements for Queensland’s power system over the summer period.

The organisations, which formed the coalition known as Exercise Wirraway, cooperate in the formulation of necessary protocols, response processes, and communication procedures for the buoyancy of the local grid system.

Major energy players involved in the exercise cover sectors in power generators, transmission, and distribution networks, including Powerlink, Energy Queensland (Ergon and Energex), CleanCo, Stanwell, CS Energy, and the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).

“The exercise brings together all parts of Queensland’s electricity supply chain in the one room to not only test existing processes but also identify how we can make further improvements to the resilience of our network,” Paul Simshauser, CEO of Powerlink, shared.

The summer period in Australia has seen an increasing demand for electricity as more extreme weather phenomena, like cyclones and bushfires, have become prominent. The Exercise Wirraway is seen as one of the initiatives to prove Queensland’s power flexibility.
