India’s coal imports down 3.1% in April to October

This was despite growth in coal-based power generation.

India has reported a decline in its coal imports during the April to October period of fiscal year 2024 to 2025, decreasing 3.1% to 149.39 million tonnes (MT) from 154.17 MT a year ago.

In a statement, the Ministry of Coal also imports for blending purposes by thermal power plants decreased by 19.5% during the same period despite a 3.87% increase in coal-based power generation.

This decline underscores India’s steadfast commitment to achieving self-sufficiency in coal production and reducing reliance on imports.

Meanwhile, imports by imported coal-based power plants increased significantly by 38.4%, reaching 30.04 MT during this period.

Coal production during April to October 2024 increased 6.04 % to 537.57 MT, reflecting ongoing efforts to streamline coal usage and enhance domestic production.
