Victoria fast-tracks $190m battery energy storage project

This will be able to supply power for nearly 70,000 homes.

The government of Victoria in Australia is fuelling its cleaner energy efforts as it accelerates the development of Global Power Generation’s battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Tarrone.

In a statement, the government said the $190m project was fast-tracked through the Labor Government’s Development Facilitation Program.

This BESS project will be able to store up to 200 megawatt-hours of energy during times of high generation. It will have the capacity to supply around 69,000 households at times of peak demand.

Victoria opened up the Development Facilitation Program to include renewable energy projects last year.

Since then, $4.4b worth of renewable energy projects have been fast-tracked. These 16 projects have the potential to power around 540,000 households annually, and battery storage capable of meeting evening peak demand for more than 1 million households.
