India adds over 20 GW of solar and wind capacity in H1

This growth is expected to continue in the next six months.

India has recorded an additional 21.9 gigawatts (GW) of new solar and wind capacity in the first half of 2025, reflecting a 56% increase from last year.

Citing data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, JMK Research said India’s renewable energy installed capacity reached 234 GW as of June 2025. Solar energy contributed 50%, followed by wind at 22%, large hydro at 21%, bio power at 5%, and small hydro at 2%.

In the first six months, 14.3 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity was added, 49% higher compared to the same period last year. The majority of this capacity was added in the second quarter.

Meanwhile, 3.5 GW of new wind power capacity was added in H1, up 84% from a year ago.

“The trend is expected to continue as new RE procurement mechanisms such as wind-solar hybrid, wind/solar with ESS, and Firm & Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) tenders gain traction,” JMK Research said.

The states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra together contributed over 50% of India’s total solar and wind capacity additions.

JMK Research said “this momentum is expected to continue in the second half of 2025, with India projected to add another 16 GW –17 GW of solar and wind capacity—reinforcing the country’s accelerating clean energy transition.”
