PT Indonesia Ruipu Nickel and Chrome Alloy & Besino Environment Co., Ltd. wins at Asian Water Awards 2025

The company was recognised for its IMIP sanitary wastewater treatment and reuse project, which saves over 1.38 million cubic metres of water annually.

PT Indonesia Ruipu Nickel and Chrome Alloy & Besino Environment Co., Ltd. received the Water Reuse and Recycling Project of the Year - Indonesia at the Asian Water Awards 2025 for its Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) sanitary wastewater treatment and reuse project. The initiative addresses two urgent concerns in the IMIP: the impact of industrial activity on the Coral Triangle’s fragile marine ecosystems and the recurring problem of water scarcity during dry seasons.

The Coral Triangle is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, but it is also highly vulnerable. Industrial operations in the area carry risks to coral reefs and marine life. At the same time, IMIP has faced water shortages that caused significant production losses in 2022. To respond, the company partnered with Besino Environment and built a wastewater treatment system that supports both ecological protection and industrial continuity.

The plant employs a series of processes: an oil and grease separator, an equalisation tank, and an integrated membrane biological reactor (MBR). Its design capacity reaches 3,800 cubic metres per day. The system consistently achieves chemical oxygen demand (COD) levels of 40mg/L or lower, compared to the permitted 100mg/L. Part of the treated water is redirected to nearby workshops, whilst a reverse osmosis (RO) unit generates water clean enough for boiler feed use.

Unlike conventional plants, the facility is built in container modules. This approach shortens construction time and reduces space requirements. With its zero-discharge design, the system conserves more than 1.38 million cubic metres of water each year.

The project has strengthened cooperation with local authorities and improved public trust. The company now intends to replicate this model across other residential zones in IMIP to further extend the benefits of wastewater reuse and recycling throughout the industrial park.

The Asian Water Awards highlights innovative water projects, initiatives, and organisations that contribute to improved water management, conservation, and sustainability in the region. It aims to promote best practices, foster knowledge sharing, and encourage collaborations across the industry.
