India adds 34.4 GW of solar and wind capacity in 9M

The majority of the new capacity is utility-scale solar power.

India has added nearly 34.4 gigawatts (GW) of new solar and wind capacity during the first nine months of 2025, reflecting a 71.5% from last year.

According to JMK Research, solar capacity increased by 68.9%, whilst wind installations experienced an even stronger surge of 88.8% from last year. Notably, the total capacity added in the first nine months of 2025 has already surpassed the total additions in 2024.

Data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy showed that the country’s installed capacity reached ~247.3 GW as of 9M. Solar energy is the major contributor, accounting for approximately 52%, followed by wind at 21%, large hydro at 20%, bio power at 5%, and small hydro at 2%.

From January to September 2025, about 22.5 GW of new utility-scale solar capacity was added, up 70.3% from last year. Notably, around 50% of this capacity (~11.1 GW) was commissioned in the third quarter alone.

In the wind sector, about 4.96 GW of new capacity was added in the first nine months, 88.8% higher than last year.

The top five states in terms of installation are Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which collectively accounted for approximately 83.8% of the total solar and wind capacity installed in India.

Gujarat led the installation tally for the first nine months with around 8.5 GW installed capacity, followed by Rajasthan (~8 GW) and Maharashtra (7 GW).

“This momentum is expected to continue in the last quarter of 2025, with India projected to add another 11 to 12 GW of solar and wind capacity. As a result, total solar and wind installations are expected to reach an unprecedented 45 to 46 GW by the end of the calendar year 2025,” JMK Research said.
