Decommissioning plans finally get approved for five Japanese reactors

These are Genkai 1, Mihama 1 and 2, Shimane 1, and Tsuruga 1.

Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA) has finally given its approval to decommissioning plans for five Japanese reactors. The reactors are Genkai 1, Mihama 1 and 2, Shimane 1, and Tsuruga 1.

These reactors were officially taken out of service 2 years ago in April 2015.

The decommmissioning plans outline the facilities and equipment to be disassembled, and a timeline for the tasks to be accomplished.

These old Japanese reactors have been declared "for decommissioning" in March 2015 after an accounting-related scheme to determine which units must not be restarted was introduced.

Genkai 1 is operated by Kyushu Electric Power Company, Shimane 1 is under Chugoku Electric Power Company, while Mihama 1 and 2 and Tsuruga 1 are all under Kansai Electric power Company and Japan Atomic Power Company.
