India maintains sufficient coal stock at thermal power plants amidst high demand

It has enough coal stock for 19 days.

India has sustained a sufficient stock of coal in thermal power plants despite “extremely high demand” for power, according to the Ministry of Coal.

In a statement on 1 June, the ministry said coal stocks in thermal power plants are still over 45 MT, which is 30% higher year on year, which is enough to meet the 19-day requirement.

“This has been made possible by ensuring smooth and adequate logistic arrangements for the supply of coal,” the ministry said.

“The mechanism of Sub-Group comprising of representatives from Ministry of Power, Ministry of Coal, Ministry of Railways and Power Generating companies is playing an effective role in maintaining efficient supply chain,” it added.

As of end-May, the average daily depletion at thermal power plants was only 10,000 tonnes.

The ministry said that coal production grew by over 8% last year, adding that the stock at the mine pit-head is more than 100 MT.

It assured that there will be sufficient coal at thermal plants during the monsoon season as over 42 MT of coal will be available at the facilities by the start of July.
